The space partnership between the United States and Italy is reaching new heights. At the National Space Day celebrations held at the Italian Embassy in the United States, Chirag Parikh, the executive secretary of the U.S. National Space Council, unveiled plans for the inaugural space dialogue between the two nations, slated for 2024. This dialogue is set to be comprehensive, encompassing all sectors, with a specific focus on fostering innovation within the industry.
Parikh underscored the commencement of a new era in space collaboration, extending beyond the national realm to the international arena. Italy is hailed as an indispensable ally in civil, security, and commercial space endeavors. The burgeoning partnerships between the two countries are evident, with Milan gearing up to host the 75th International Astronautical Congress in 2024, solidifying Italy’s aspirations to assume a prominent role in the global space community.
Parikh’s declaration affirms the robust bilateral connections between Washington and Rome. Italy’s formal participation in Combined Space Operations (CSpO), a multinational initiative aimed at bolstering interoperability among allied nations in crucial capabilities, serves as a tangible manifestation of this collaboration. Originally initiated in 2014 with the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, and Germany, Italy joined this initiative in December 2020, expanding participation beyond the Anglosphere.
Italy’s inclusion in CSpO reflects the nation’s ambition to take a leading role in space defense. This collaboration, extending beyond military realms to commercial ventures, is exemplified by the involvement of the Texas-based company Axiom. NASA selected Axiom to construct a commercial space station to replace the existing international station, with Thales Alenia Space Italia contributing to the project by overseeing the design, development, and assembly of key components.
The collaboration further extends to the Italian Air Force, represented by Colonel Walter Villadei, who will participate in the Ax-3 mission. Colonel Villadei will play a pivotal role in coordinating scientific experiments sponsored by the Ministry of Defense and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Additionally, the mission will facilitate the introduction of Italian cuisine into space as part of the Italian Space Food Project. Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Francesco Lollobrigida emphasized how this initiative contributes to elevating the status of Italian cuisine as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ambassador Zappia highlighted that the Space Food Project is merely one facet of the extensive and enduring collaboration between Italy and the United States in the space sector, with Italy bringing creativity and innovation to the forefront.
