The 2023 Report on the Quality of Life in European Cities by Eurostat is based on the level of satisfaction perceived by citizens in relation to different aspects of their lives, such as living costs, air quality, cultural services, transports, job opportunities, and risks. The results show that while capital cities are perceived as offering more job opportunities, smaller cities are considered as a better place to live, especially for families with children and older people.
As concerns Italian cities, the 34th survey by Il Sole 24 Ore takes into account more objective parameters that fall within the following categories: Wealth and Consumption, Business and Labor, Demographics and Society, Environment and Services, Justice and Security, Culture and Leisure. The overall ranking sees Udine in the lead, followed by Bologna and Trento. A more detailed analysis shows that Udine is first for Women’s Quality of Life and eighth for Children’s Quality of Life; it occupies the fourth place in the “Justice and Security” category for the limited frequency of computer crimes and car thefts, and stands out for the low presence of bankrupt enterprises. Milan confirms its position among the top ten cities and ranks first in the “Business and Labor” category thanks to a good presence of innovative start-ups and e-commerce companies. Even the province of Monza and Brianza ranks among the first ten cities and wins the “Wealth and Consumption” category thanks to the real estate industry. Moreover, the province of Bolzano is the one with fewer bankruptcies and more people employed. However, even though the North-South financial gap is still a problem, Southern Italy excels in youth entrepreneurship.
